Proto Anime Cut is a project of Les Jardins des Pilotes (Berlin) and 2dK (Tokyo). It is an exhibition and film screening programme that for the first time in Europe presents protagonists of the Japanese Anime culture as independent artists. For some years Anime, Japanese animation films, have no longer just been popular for fans but are also gaining increasing influence from a mainstream audience in global pop culture. Nearly every young urban citizen understands the raw idea of Anime. The concept is renowned for its specific themes of feelings and colors, lines and movements and its common use of huge robots with big eyes.
Proto Anime Cut ist ein Projekt von Les Jardins des Pilotes (Berlin) und 2dK (Tokio). Es handelt sich um eine Ausstellung (mit begleitendem Filmprogramm), die erstmals in Europa die Protagonisten der japanischen Anime-Kultur als eigenständige Künstlerpersönlichkeiten vorstellt. Anime, japanische Animationsfilme, sind seit einigen Jahren nicht mehr nur bei Fans beliebt, sondern gewinnen zunehmend Einfluss auf den Mainstream einer globalen Popkultur. Nahezu alle jungen Stadtbewohner wissen heutzutage etwas mit dem Begriff Anime anzufangen – er bringt Assoziationen mit einem bestimmten Gefühl für Farben und Linien.

The Künstlerhaus Bethanien is a think tank and production platform that provides international artists with a stimulating work environment and professional presentation facilities. Through our work we aim to foster encounters between artists from various backgrounds and countries and to encourage an ongoing dialogue with the public. The focus of our manifold activities lies on the International Studio Programme, which year after year welcomes artists from around the world who develop, discuss and present their projects with the expert assistance of our team. Editing and publishing critical literature on contemporary art and culture forms an integral part of our mission. Besides the BE Magazine, our yearly in-house publication, the Künstlerhaus Bethanien furthermore publishes numerous artists’ and exhibition catalogues. In 2010, after more than 35 years of commitment to the development of contemporary art and the advancement of artists, the Künstlerhaus Bethanien GmbH has moved to new premises. Our new venue has enabled us to expand the International Studio Programme, which now accommodates 25 artists’ studios on Kohlfurter Strasse 41-43 and equally enlarged first-rate exhibition spaces on Kottbusser Strasse 10.
Das Künstlerhaus Bethanien ist Arbeits- und Präsentationsort, internationale Künstlerplattform und Think Tank. Es dient der Begegnung und dem Austausch von KünstlerInnen unterschiedlicher Disziplinen und Nationalitäten sowohl untereinander als auch mit einem interessierten Publikum. Schwerpunkt des breit gefächerten Aufgabenbereichs ist das Internationale Atelierprogramm, in dem Jahr für Jahr KünstlerInnen aus aller Welt mit der Unterstützung unseres Teams Projekte ausarbeiten, diskutieren und präsentieren. Die kritische Reflexion und publizistische Aktivitäten zum Thema zeitgenössische Kunst und Kultur gehören ebenso zu den Anliegen des Künstlerhauses. Neben dem BE-Magazin, einer jährlich erscheinenden kritischen Fachzeitschrift, publiziert das Künstlerhaus zahlreiche Künstler- und Ausstellungskataloge. Seit seinem Umzug in die „Lichtfabrik“ an der Kohlfurter Str. 41-43 im Juni 2010 verfügt das Künstlerhaus Bethanien, dessen Name als Marke geschützt wurde, über erweiterte Atelier- und Ausstellungsflächen, die eine verbesserte Arbeitssituation und eine Ausweitung der Projektaktivitäten ermöglichen.
